2018: Is the Pixie Cut Back In Style ?

O.K. let me admit right up front; I am not a fan of short hair – but whether I like it or not the “pixie cut” is very much back in style . Unfortunately , it never went out of style in Sarasota where you will see so many women wearing an extremely matronly and masculine form of this cut.

Sometimes, a short cut is the best answer to “what should I do with my very damaged hair?” Or maybe you went to a cheap salon and got a terrible cut. Short just might be a “fresh start.”

If you want a pixie cut, fine. But let’s do it the right way. This means the older you are, the softer it must be. Brutally crisp lines can look good on a cute 20 year old;   but if you are older than 30 you need to be wearing a softer more feminine version. The hair should never be cut clean around the ears; it should either softly brush against the ear, wisp over the ear , or be tucked behind the ear. Cut clean around ear is the hallmark of a cheap haircut.

Furthermore, it should not look contrived or artificial; it should not have that “just cut at the salon” look.

And if you want lift on top without having to work your hair with a round brush, you will need to leave enough length –  approximately a minimum of three to four inches at the crown to achieve that.

In the back at the nape, once again it should not be a hard straight line but a very soft line. It need not be a perfectly straight line. At the hair shows, I’ve attended, I’ve heard the words “ripped, torn, frayed,” used to describe how the perimeter of a short cut should be done. So if you want one of these new short cuts, come to me and have it done right.

Pop Quiz: Only one of those short hairstyles shown above is suitable for a woman over thirty. Do you know which one?
